Assistant Professor of Criminology

Position Details: The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology at Randolph-Macon College invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Criminology position (tenure-track) to begin September 1, 2025.  

Institutional Information: Randolph-Macon College, founded in 1830, is a selective, primarily residential liberal arts college with an enrollment of 1500 students located in the northern suburbs of Richmond, Virginia. It is 90 miles south of Washington, DC and 15 miles north of Richmond. The Criminology major is housed in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology and takes such an approach to teaching Criminology. The program is expanding and gaining wide student interest. We are looking for candidates who have an innovative vision for the development of the program. 

Major/Essential Functions: Randolph-Macon College faculty teach, advise, conduct research, engage in scholarship, and serve the College and department. Primary teaching responsibilities will include Criminology and Sociology courses, Research Methods, courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, and contributions to the College’s general education program. The teaching load is 20-22 hours per year. We are particularly interested in scholars whose graduate training qualifies them to integrate criminological theory in all courses, who possess the ability to teach courses that engage critical perspectives on criminology, and who may teach courses that can contribute to the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies and/or the Black Studies programs.  

QUALIFICATIONS 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Ph.D. (or A.B.D.) in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or Sociology. ABD applicants must have completed all degree requirements by July 1, 2025. 

Evidence of training/coursework in criminology or criminal justice, with significant graduate coursework in sociology, or training/coursework in sociology with significant graduate coursework in criminology or criminal justice. Candidates must possess a strong foundation in criminological theory and social science research methods.

Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching. 

Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student engagement to the liberal arts tradition

Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that facilitate the success of all students. 

Evidence of active research agenda.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Demonstrated innovative vision for our new and rapidly expanding Criminology major including building community partnerships, teaching community-based courses, and/or experience in program development.

Specialization in Victimology and/or Cross-Cultural/International Focus.

Demonstrated ability to integrate criminological theory and critical perspectives in criminology courses.  

Ability to teach a mixed methods undergraduate social science methods course.

Ability to contribute to the Sociology curriculum through inequality-related courses which may also contribute to Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, and Black Studies.
